All the suggested activities are within easy access of Annat, near Torridon and the Applecross Peninsula, allowing our guests at The Birdhouse or Kathleen’s Croft to make the most of their visit.

Stargazing in Torridon

The area around Torridon is known for its dark skies, making it a great location for stargazing. Thanks to minimal light pollution, the Milky Way and countless stars can be enjoyed. This is also an excellent spot to see the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis.

The best time to view the Northern Lights is between October and March. Keep an eye on the Aurora forecast to help you choose the right time.Great for: Couples, nature lovers, and those interested in experiencing the magic of the Highlands at night.

Bouldering and climbing in Torridon

Torridon offers arguably some of the best bouldering in Scotland. The area is home to Gneiss and Sandstone boulders, with routes suitable for all skill levels. The mountain ranges include Beinn Alligin, Beinn Liathach, and Beinn Eighe.

Climb Torridon offers qualified, experienced instructors to guide you on climbs in the area, regardless of your ability. The Western Highlands of Scotland offers some of the most exceptional mountaineering and climbing in the UK, from sport climbing and single-pitch crags to multi-pitch winter climbs.

But what is the difference between bouldering and climbing? Bouldering refers to lower height climbing and doesn’t require harnesses or ropes, whereas climbing involves more technical movements and the use of climbing equipment. North coast 500 and the Bealach na Bà , Applecross, Scottish Highlands

The NC500 covers over 500 miles and offers some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery and has sometimes been referred to as ‘Scotland’s Route 66.’ You’ll start your journey in Inverness, before winding your way along the beautiful western coast. A highlight of this journey is the Bealach na Bà pass, near Applecross, one of the most dramatic and challenging roads in the UK.

Known for its hairpin bends and stunning panoramic views, this route features rugged mountains and a breathtaking coastline. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a road trip enthusiast, this is an unforgettable journey.

The route passes through Wester Ross, where a stay at The Birdhouse is the perfect way to break up your journey through this beautiful countryside.

Sea Kayaking & Adventures – Explore the Wild Coast and Mountains

Enjoy crystal-clear waters, stunning scenery, and abundant wildlife on a sea kayaking adventure. With trips available for both beginners and experienced paddlers, you can explore Loch Shieldaig, Upper Loch Torridon, and Loch Maree Island.

Whether you’re looking for a half-day, full-day, or multi-day adventure, there’s plenty to discover. Keep an eye out for common seals, otters, and dolphins, and along the shoreline, you might spot oystercatchers, ringed plovers, redshank, turnstones, and herons, which are frequently seen around the loch.

Whisky Tasting Experience at The Torridon

With over 365 single malts on offer, you’ll have the chance to experience some of the finest Scottish whiskies. A local expert will guide you through the history of the dram, sharing fascinating insights into the unique flavors and traditions of whiskies from various regions across Scotland.

The tasting sessions, held in the cosy library, last for an hour and offer a perfect opportunity to savour some delicious, locally sourced whiskies.

There are several locations where you can enjoy a spot of wild swimming while visiting the Western Highlands. With beaches within walking distance of The Birdhouse and Kathleen’s Croft, you are spoilt for choice.

At The Birdhouse, you can take a short stroll to the local beach or enjoy a 45-minute walk to the beautiful Coral Beach, which is well worth the walk.

At Kathleen’s Croft, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in nearby Loch Torridon. If you fancy swimming in small pools with waterfalls, park in the pub car park by the Loch Torridon Hotel. Follow the signposted path to Beinn Damph (Allt Caire Roill). Walk through the woods and keep to the path on the left next to the river. This route offers a series of small pools and several waterfalls in crystal-clear waters. Watch out for tree trunks underwater!
